 This is a list international sports federations, each of which functions as an unofficial governing body for the sport they are responsible for and manages its sport at a world level, typically preparing rules, promoting the sport to potential fans and spectators or developing future players and organising continental or world championships. Certain international sports federations, like for instance the International Swimming Federation and the International Skating Union, may supervise multiple activities that are known in common usage as separate sports. FINA, for example governs swimming, diving, synchronised swimming and water polo, as separate "disciplines" within the single "sport" of Aquatics.
 
 International sports federations are an integral part to the Olympic and Paralympic movements. Each Olympic activity is hosted through its international sports federation, which assists in coordinating the events of its discipline during Games. To make a sport an Olympic sport the international sports federation must be recognized from the International Olympic Committee.
 
 
 Also, an international sporting association must be recognized to the International Paralympic Committee for the sport to become one of the paralympic sports, even though in the latter case, several Paralympic Sports are managed by a specific panel of International Paralympic Committee itself, as part of the World Para branding, for example track and field athletics for athletes who are disabled is managed by the IPC and its name "World Para Athletics". Other Paralympic sport are also governed by the structure of the able-bodied equivalent like the UCI governs both ablebodied and paralympic cycling.
